2013 HIV/AIDS & Aging Symposium

The 2013 HIV/AIDS and Aging Symposium is an annual gathering of Central Texas social workers, physicians, nurses, and care managers to learn more about the issues related to older adults and HIV/AIDS. The Symposium is hosted by a collaboration of leading local nonprofit organizations. Together, we can improve the lives of Central Texans aging with HIV/AIDS, and enhance prevention efforts for this population.

Plenary Speakers

Jane FowlerPhoto of Jane Flower
Jane Fowler knows first-hand the challenges of living with HIV: she was diagnosed with the virus in 1991. A retired journalist who now devotes her energies to HIV/AIDS prevention and education, she has given hundreds of presentations at local, state, regional, national and international meetings and conferences. After becoming an activist and public speaker in 1995, Jane was a co-founder of the National Association on HIV Over Fifty (NAHOF). She served five years as volunteer co-chairperson on the NAHOF board and later as national coordinator of the group. Click here to learn more about Jane Fowler. 

Dr. Mark Brennan-Ing
Mark Brennan-Ing, PhD, is the Director for Research and Evaluation at the AIDS Community Research Initiative of Mark Brennan PhotoAmerica (ACRIA), and an Adjunct Professor at the New York University College of Nursing. Dr. Brennan-Ing joined ACRIA in 2007 to conduct behavioral research on psychosocial issues affecting persons living with HIV, with a special focus on older adults. Since coming to ACRIA, Dr. Brennan-Ing’s work has focused on mental health, social supports, and resilience among older adults with HIV. He is Past-President and current Board Member of the State Society on Aging of New York, and is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America. Learn more about Dr. Brennan-Ing’s research.

Dr. David Wright
wright-davidDr. Wright completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX in 1980. He completed residency at Central Texas Medical Foundation Family Medicine Residency Program at Brackenridge Hospital in 1983. Following his residency, Dr. Wright clinical Director for the Mescalero Indian Health Service in Mescalero, New Mexico until 1985. He then returned to the residency program where he became the Associate Directorand Director until 1994. Dr. Wright was also named Texas Academy Family Physician, Texas Physician of the Year 2002. Currently Dr. Wright is part of the wonderfully dynamic team of doctors at the Blackstock Family Health Center. To learn more about Dr. Wright’s work in the community, click here.
