Caregiver U
CaregiverU is a collaboration of 20 Central Texas non-profit agencies and community organizations, joining together to bring support and resources to families that are caring for an older loved one. We are currently offering one course for caregivers and one course for older adults themselves. Classes are offered at no cost to participants. They are offered multiple times throughout the year at various locations in the Central Texas area, depending on who is teaching and hosting the course.
Currently, CaregiverU has two course offerings:
Powerful Tools for Caregivers A free six-week course that provides emotional support for family caregivers. The curriculum covers self-care Behaviors (e.g. increased exercise, relaxation and medical check-ups), management of emotions (reduced guilt, anger, and depression), self-efficacy (increased confidence in coping with caregiving demands), and use of community resources (increased utilization of local services).
Classes offered in Austin, Georgetown, Round Rock, Dripping Springs, Bastrop, and San Marcos. Click here for the current schedule.
A Matter of Balance / Strong Seniors This is a free fall prevention program designed to reduce the risk of devastating falls in older adults, and to help seniors develop an active, healthy lifestyle. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable; set realistic goals to increase activity; change their environment to reduce fall risk factors; and exercise to increase strength and balance.
